Foreign Secretary William Hague today welcomed Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi to London and discussed energy security & EU reform.

The Foreign Secretary met with his Hungarian counterpart Mr János Martonyi  today to discuss joint cooperation on a range of global and EU issues, including energy, EU reform and open government.

Mr Hague said:

“Today we had a productive discussion about our bilateral relationship, EU reform and foreign policy priorities such as Syria, Iran and EU enlargement.

“We agreed that the UK and Hungary should work together to promote the development of reliable, competitive and sustainable energy systems which support European growth.  We discussed how EU member states should be free from excessive regulation to develop nuclear power and exploit shale gas reserves.

“We discussed the need for EU reform, and pledged to work together to ensure that action should be taken at the national level wherever possible, allowing the EU to focus on areas where it adds most value.  We agreed to work together to address the EU’s democratic accountability, including through a strengthened role for national parliaments.

“As fellow members of the Open Government Partnership, we agreed the importance of openness, transparency and accountability in government.

“Finally, we agreed to work together to deliver successful British and Hungarian presidencies of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in 2014 and 2015.”
